Ammonia nitrogen refers to ammonia present in the form of free ammonia (also known as non-ionized ammonia, NH3) or ionized ammonium (NH4+). At higher pH levels, the proportion of free ammonia is greater; conversely, at lower pH levels, the proportion of ammonium ions is higher.
