As we all know, during the use of water quality analyzers, contaminants in the sample water can affect the instrument’s performance. Therefore, after a period of operation, it is necessary to clean and calibrate the equipment to ensure the accuracy of water quality measurements; however, certain challenges may arise during calibration and cleaning.
For example, in water quality testing, the pH electrode is one of the most commonly used instruments, and the buffer solutions are the standard for routine calibration. But how do you choose among the many pH calibration solutions available on the market? I’m sure many people aren’t sure. Let’s talk about it today.
Regular calibration of pH water quality meters ensures the accuracy of water quality measurement data. Although most pH electrodes are calibrated based on slope and offset, over time the electrodes in water quality instruments gradually degrade, so each measurement no longer fully conforms to the Nernst equation.
This is why we recommend regular electrode calibration: by determining the actual slope and offset of a known buffer solution, you can compensate for electrode aging and, combined with the appropriate algorithm, obtain accurate results. Additionally, using pH calibration solutions can help detect any damage to the electrode.
Although we recommend calibrating once daily, we understand that this can be time‑consuming, and many people are busy. If high accuracy is not critical for your measurements, you can calibrate one to two times per week. Since the shelf life of calibration solutions is shortened after opening the bottle, if you only calibrate once a week, consider using single‑use vials to ensure you always work with fresh buffer.
