To meet public expectations regarding urbanization and its level of development, it is essential to strengthen the construction of urban stormwater and sewage networks and to enhance the technologies and standards for their monitoring. This paper focuses on flow‑monitoring systems and technologies for urban stormwater and sewage networks, and conducts an analysis and study of the relevant aspects of water‑quality monitoring systems for these networks.
At present, there are two main methods for monitoring the flow rates of stormwater and sewage:
First, manual monitoring is extremely time-consuming and requires substantial human and material resources.
Second, equipment for measuring stormwater and sewage flow is employed, typically utilizing channel‑throttling or installing grooves along a section of the channel. However, for stormwater and sewage that are highly viscous, strongly corrosive, or heavily contaminated, such meters suffer from short service life and poor accuracy.

In addition, urban stormwater and sewage discharge pipelines are generally underutilized, with extensive and dispersed networks spanning the entire city. Enhancing the accuracy of flow measurement through modern sensing technologies and leveraging wireless networking to centralize data at the municipal stormwater and sewage monitoring authority for unified oversight and management are critical to achieving effective flow monitoring of urban stormwater and sewage networks. Precisely tracking changes in water flow within these pipelines helps accurately assess their operational condition, thereby improving the scientific basis of decisions regarding drainage system upgrades and elevating the overall level of system operation and maintenance. A real-time online monitoring system for domestic wastewater networks has been designed, enabling continuous, on‑site measurement of underground wastewater flow in urban sewer systems and supporting the management and maintenance of these networks through data‑driven insights.
