Introduction to Little New Year
“Little New Year” is not a single, fixed festival; depending on local customs, the specific holiday known as “Little New Year” varies from place to place. During this period, the main folk activities include pasting Spring Festival couplets, sweeping away the old year’s dust, and offering sacrifices to the Kitchen God. The concept and date of Little New Year differ across regions: in northern China it falls on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month, while in southern China it is observed on the 24th day of the 12th lunar month.

Kitchen God Worship
On this day of the year, it is also the traditional folk festival for honoring the Kitchen God. According to popular belief, on the twenty-third day of the twelfth lunar month, the Kitchen God ascends to Heaven to report to the Jade Emperor on the good and bad deeds of the household, prompting the Emperor to mete out rewards or punishments. Therefore, during the Kitchen God offering, people set out sweets, clear water, soybeans, and fodder on a small table before the Kitchen God’s image; the latter three are prepared as provisions for the God’s celestial steed. When making the offering, they also melt Guandong candy over a flame and smear it on the Kitchen God’s mouth.
 

Sweep away the dust
With the twenty-third day of the lunar month behind us, only six or seven days remain until the Spring Festival, and preparations for the New Year have grown even more fervent. A thorough indoor cleaning—commonly known as “sweeping away the dust”—is carried out to bid farewell to the old and welcome the new, banishing all ill fortune. Every household undertakes a meticulous and comprehensive cleanup, ensuring that windows are bright and rooms are spotless. Walls are whitewashed, glass is polished, paper‑cut window decorations are pasted, and New Year paintings are affixed, among other tasks.
 

Cutting paper window decorations
Among all the preparations, cutting and pasting paper window decorations is the most popular folk tradition. The designs depict a variety of animals and plants, often drawn from traditional tales—such as magpies perching on plum blossoms, swallows darting through peach and willow branches, peacocks playing among peonies, lions tumbling with embroidered balls, three sheep heralding prosperity, two dragons chasing a pearl, deer and cranes symbolizing harmony and spring, five bats representing abundant blessings surrounding longevity, rhinoceroses gazing at the moon, lotus flowers signifying continuous abundance, mandarin ducks frolicking in water, Liu Hai amusing a golden cicada, and the two immortals Hehe, among others.
