Bridge Collision-Prevention Early-Warning and Monitoring Solution
Project Background
In recent years, driven by the rapid growth of China’s national economy, inland waterway transport has expanded swiftly, leading to increasingly heavy traffic. However, due to limited navigable clearances beneath bridge structures and human error on the part of vessel operators, collisions between ships and bridges have become frequent. A particularly notable incident was the 2007 collision involving the Jiujiang Bridge in Guangdong, which resulted in direct losses exceeding RMB 20 million. In October 2010, a 1,000‑ton cargo vessel named “Henghui 01,” while passing under the Wanjiang Bridge in Dongguan, struck the bottom of the bridge’s navigation span, leaving the vessel immobilized. The accident claimed one life and injured another, temporarily disrupting navigation in the affected waters and on the Wanjiang Bridge itself. Such collisions pose a serious threat to the safety of both bridges and waterways, disrupt normal transportation flows, and impose substantial administrative burdens on maritime and transportation authorities.
This design scheme employs three technological approaches to monitor vessels passing under the bridge, providing comprehensive protection across the entire spectrum—from predictive analysis and early warning to passive defense.

Implementation Plan
Radar sensors installed on the water surface monitor vessel position and course, measure vessel draft, and provide navigation guidance as well as yaw‑angle and over‑height warnings via signage mounted on bridges and audio‑visual alarm devices.
Deployment Plan
This plan adopts different deployment strategies based on the width of the navigation channel, thereby reducing costs. The specific deployment schemes are as follows:
1) If the pier width is within 40 meters, one radar sensor can be installed on each side of the bridge.
2) If the pier width exceeds 40 meters, separate installations are required on each pier.
Based on the on-site channel conditions and the radar sensor’s installation location, a dedicated software is used to define no‑navigation zones; when a vessel enters such a zone, an alarm is triggered.
